Breathing-Associated Facial Region Segmentation for Thermal Camera-Based Indirect Breathing Monitoring

(Objective)Breathing can be measured in a non-contact method using thermal camera. The objective of this study investigates breathing measurements cameras, which have previously been limited to measuring the nostril only from front where it is clearly visible. previous challenging use for other angles and frontal views, not well-represented. In paper, we defined new region called breathing-associated-facial-region (BAFR) that reflects physiological characteristics breathing, extract signals views 45 90 degrees, including view (Methods) Experiments were conducted on fifteen healthy subjects different with without nostril, 45-degree, 90-degree views. A camera (A655sc model, FLIR systems) was used measurement, biopac (MP150, Biopac-systems-Inc) as chest reference. (Results) results showed proposed algorithm could stable at various achieving an average cycle accuracy 90.9% when applied compared 65.6% algorithm. correlation value increases 0.587 0.885. (Conclusion)The monitored variety environments BAFR diverse (Clinical Impact)The shows feasibility reliable monitoring versatile accurate than methods. monitor clinical environments, isolated wards, operation rooms, intensive care units high infection risks.
